REAL Fun Pty Ltd, provides a range of paddling skills courses to rescue and guide's courses. We are a team of enthusiastic whitewater instructors and guides who have many years of experience locally and internationally and are highly qualified in our chosen field.

The courses are useful to those people who would like to improve their skills for their own personal satisfaction.

Kayak courses

Introduction to Kayaking 101.

 

Dates: Sunday 30th May 2010 When: 12.30pm – 4.30pm

Dates: Sunday 5th September, 10th october, 31st October, 14th November, 28th November, 12th december 2010 When: 9am -1pm

Where: Lotus Bay, Alexandrina Drive, Lake Burley Griffin.

Your investment: $99 includes kayak hire, $85 if you have your own boat.

Inclusions: kayak hire, PFD, paddles and spray skirt, instruction by trained guides with many years of kayaking experience, morning tea.

 

Perfect for the novice or inexperienced paddler.

You Will Learn: Learn how to enter and exit a kayak safely, correct paddle grip, forward and backwards strokes, turning the kayak, emergency stops, support strokes and capsize drill. After participating on this course you will have the skills to explore inland waterways in fine conditions.

 

Introduction to White Water Kayaking

Dates: 11th - 12th September, 9th - 10th October

Times: 9am – 5pm on 2 days

Where: Pine Island, Murrumbidgee River Canberra.

Your investment: $280 if you have your own boat. We have a limited amount of kayaks for hire for an extra $60 per person.

Inclusions: Instruction by trained guides with many years of kayaking experience, morning tea, lunches and afternoon tea. Courtesy return transport to start point for river trips.

Pre requisites: Having participated on intro to kayaking 101 or at a level where you are competent with all the flatwater skills of kayaking 101.

 

This course run over a weekend will teach you the basics for kayaking on whitewater.

You Will Learn: 

Day 1: Involves a refresher of all the skills you have already learnt, an introduction to whitewater safety then progresses onto moving water skills of ferry gliding, breaking in and out of currents, swimming a rapid and basic river reading skills. Introduction to Eskimo rolling if time allows.

 

Day 2: Eskimo rolling practice. Then practice your skills as we do a river trip on grade 2 moving water. Finishing the day with an introduction to river rescue skills.

 

River Rescue

18th - 19th September 2010, 16th -17th October 2010


$240 per person. Early bird discount of $45 available if booked and paid 30 days prior to course.

This course is designed for recreational paddlers. You will learn the principles and skills to deal with rescue situations you may encounter while paddling recreationally.

You Will Learn: Rescue principles, River hydrology, Personal equipment, Rescue equipment, Introduction to knots and anchors, Communications, Swimming in rapids, Strainer negotiation, Throw bag practice, Tension diagonals, Contact rescues, H &alt; T rescues, Deck carries, Mechanical advantage systems, Shallow water crossings, Snag &alt; Tag lines, Pins & wraps.

Eskimo rolling tuition (Available on demand)

$50 per lesson. Boat hire available at $20 if you need it.

During the warmer summer months one on one tuition is available on Lake Burley Griffin or the Murrumbidgee River at Pine Island.

During the winter months May to August Wetspot Watersports books 2 lanes in a local indoor swimming pool. I am available to teach one on one tuition during these sessions. Pre booking is essential and all bookings are being made through Wetspot on 6239 1323.

Depending on your learning speed most people will be comfortably rolling after 2 - 3 sessions.

You Will Learn: High brace and support strokes, hip snap, eskimo rolling technique.

Raft Guides Course - To Be Advised

This course is designed for people that would like to become commercial raft guides . You will learn the principles and skills to guide a raft up to grade IV whitewater. You will also be trained in river rescue skills and principles. The course will be run over 7 days around Canberra and the Snowy mountains region. Rivers used for the course will be decided closer to the course dates and are dependent on suitable river levels. On Day 1 you will receive a comprehensive Raft Guide Manual that has been approved by N.S.W. Waterways.

You Will Learn: Personal Equipment, Outline &alt; care of rafting equipment, Safety Talk , In-boat safety talk, Rafting commands, Hydrology, Swimming in rapids, Hand and whistle signals, Packing equipment, Rigging net &alt; flip-flop frames, Camp skills, cooking, etc, Environmental procedures, Boat wraps, Boat flips &alt; practice, Decision making, Setting up safety on rapids, Trip preparation &alt; planning, Waterfall techniques, Evacuation procedures, Raft Repair, First Aid, Guide etiquette/professionalism.
